We All Scream for Ice Cream…CONES!

110 Years ago today, JULY 23, 1904, a tasty treat was invented in our town:

St. Louis, Missouri, Home of the First Ice Cream Cone
Do you love ice cream? How about an ice cream cone? Did you know that the first cone was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904?

Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri fills a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream, and the ice cream cone is invented.Worlds Fair cones

The story goes that when the ice cream vendor ran out of paper cups and spoons, he put the ice cream in a rolled up waffle that the man in the next booth was selling — and an invention was born — by accident!

June 15 = Smile Power Day!

A warm smile is the universal language of kindness. – William Arthur Ward

114599_pcSmile Power Day is the perfect excuse to shine your pearly whites and show off those dimples. And no, a smiley face or an emoticon won’t do! Not today, at least!

Today, you are powerful. Today, you can change the world. Today, you can…SMILE!

markYep, it’s time to use that most powerful weapon and celebrate Smile Power Day with a great smile. Smiling (even when you’re not happy) can help lift your mood and it helps everyone around you feel better. Smiling is something that is understood by everyone despite culture, race, or religion; it is internationally known.

sydNobody knows who came up with the idea of dedicating a whole 24 hours to the smile, but one thing is certain: we’re the only creatures on the planet that can do it. Whether fate smiled upon you or not, you can always find a good reason to smile. So grin from ear to ear, look on the bright side and smile your troubles away.

And remember, Smile Power Day is meant to be shared with loved ones. Most importantly, when you crack a smile today, remember that it’s not Smile Power Day unless you can put a smile one someone else’s face, too!

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened. – Dr. Seuss1015418_10151664495778641_479488366_o

But, we should not forget the reason we have a day off work and are out having fun. Memorial Day is a day of remembering those courageous men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. memorialday-postMany people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor those who made the greatest sacrifice while serving our country. April Fools, April Smiles!

“April 1.¬† This is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are on the other three hundred and sixty-four.” –Mark Twain

Spaghetti really DOES grow on trees! :-O
Spaghetti really DOES grow on trees! :-O

April Fools’ pranks have been around for a very long time! Following is a CLASSIC April Fools’ joke played on TV viewers in England.

In 1957, a British news program managed to convince hundreds of people that spaghetti could grow on trees.

Oh yes they did…listen to THIS:¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Prior to April 1st, the BBC program,Panorama, went to Switzerland to film a segment about the great spaghetti harvest, which was made possible by the “virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil.” They placed cooked¬†spaghetti¬†on tree branches and filmed local girls¬†“harvesting” the pasta.spaghetti

_40980449_spag238After airing the segment, the station¬†was bombarded with phone calls asking how to grow a spaghetti tree.(?!?) Before the broadcast ended for the night, the anchors confessed to the prank. Genius!maxresdefaultMaybe it wasn’t on an international scale like the BBC, but have YOU ever pranked someone with a clever April Fool’s joke? Let us know!1441397_10151996968753641_1635680114_n

Waffles for Everyone!

March 25 is INTERNATIONAL WAFFLE DAY. Waffle Day began in Sweden as Våffeldagen; this day historically marks the beginning of spring and is celebrated by the eating of many waffles.SOH Waffle 2

This remarkable dough-based gridded cake can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner, snack or dessert.

Take this day to explore the variety that the world of the waffle has to offer you:¬† topped with fried chicken or stacked and drenched in sugary maple syrup, dusted with confectioner‚Äôs sugar or coated in chocolate or cream…yum!

A Few Waffle Fun Facts:

SOH Waffles* The word ‚Äúwaffle‚ÄĚ is from the Dutch, meaning ‚Äúwafer.‚ÄĚ

* In the late 1800’s, Thomas Jefferson returned from France with a waffle iron.

* Eggo Waffles were introduced in supermarket freezer sections in 1953.
