Octoberis National Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of screening and the early detection of breast cancer. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point during her life. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women. Right now there are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. The good news? Many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early.
As is well known Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.
Harvey also created World Smile Day because he thought that we should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts. Since that first World Smile Day® in 1999, it continues every year in Smiley’s hometown of Worcester, MA and around the world.

National Smile Week is celebrated during the second week of August and was established to promote dental health and the maintenance of a brilliant smile. But smiling has a positive effect on more than just your looks. It can be therapeutic and can also create a friendlier environment wherever you may be.
What’s even better is that smiling is contagious, the more you smile, the more others will smile with you!
A smile is the most universally recognized social expression. Smiles translate into every culture, language and social context and can be recognized up to 300′ away.
So make sure to smile today, smile tomorrow and smile every day…turn smiling into a daily habit!
110 Years ago today, JULY 23, 1904, a tasty treat was invented in our town:
St. Louis, Missouri, Home of the First Ice Cream Cone Do you love ice cream? How about an ice cream cone? Did you know that the first cone was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904?
Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri fills a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream, and the ice cream cone is invented.
The story goes that when the ice cream vendor ran out of paper cups and spoons, he put the ice cream in a rolled up waffle that the man in the next booth was selling — and an invention was born — by accident!
So you can thank Chuck for giving us one of American’s favorite desserts…one scoop or two?!? 🙂
To commemorate this special day, we are featuring the Smiles Behind the Smiles, Part 7. Seeds of Happiness has partnered with Canterbury Enterprises, Inc. to produce the molded balls of clay which are then sculpted at the Seeds of Happiness studio. We are fortunate to have a very dedicated, hardworking AND fun couple working on our project.

Smile Power Day is the perfect excuse to shine your pearly whites and show off those dimples. And no, a smiley face or an emoticon won’t do! Not today, at least!
Today, you are powerful. Today, you can change the world. Today, you can…SMILE!
Yep, it’s time to use that most powerful weapon and celebrate Smile Power Day with a great smile. Smiling (even when you’re not happy) can help lift your mood and it helps everyone around you feel better. Smiling is something that is understood by everyone despite culture, race, or religion; it is internationally known.
Nobody knows who came up with the idea of dedicating a whole 24 hours to the smile, but one thing is certain: we’re the only creatures on the planet that can do it. Whether fate smiled upon you or not, you can always find a good reason to smile. So grin from ear to ear, look on the bright side and smile your troubles away.
And remember, Smile Power Day is meant to be shared with loved ones. Most importantly, when you crack a smile today, remember that it’s not Smile Power Day unless you can put a smile one someone else’s face, too!
Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened. – Dr. Seuss
